Anorthosis win derby match against Nea Salamina. The match had a lot at stake between the two clubs. Rivalry and bragging rights, top 6 position, missing out on the championship round and a glimmer of hope for Europa League qualification.

Anorthosis had been dealt heavy losses in their last few games (4-0 Apoel and 3-0 AEK) and were desperate to get the three points to ensure their place in the championship round and fight for third place and way into Europe.

It is worrying to see that nearing the end of the first phase of the season and Anorthosis have yet to field a stable squad. Starting from the goalkeeping position, Anorthosis have the third “main” goalkeeper of the season in young Francis Uzoho. Young Dimitriou was called back between the posts for this critical match which shows the merry go round of goalkeepers show at Anorthosis. There is also a lack of creativity in the team and it shows in the number of goals scored.

The shining lights for Anorthosis this season have been the leadership of the captain Joao Victor. Young Michalis Ioannou who is a promising talent for the future and Anorthosis should fight to keep. Michal Duris and his presence in leading the front line. This win gives coach Streppel some breathing space and time to plan for the championship round.

Nea Salamina have looked the better team all season but the pressure seems to be effecting their play of late. Nea Salamina’s goals of achieving a top 6 finish this season is balanced on the edge after this loss and will find Omonia breathing on their backs until the last kick of the first round. Coach “Poursa” has been successful with this squad and a top 6 finish will be just reward for the efforts of the entire team.

Charles Eloundou was missed dearly from the front three of Salamina in this match and Coach Poursaitidis will look forward to having him back for the last two games of the first round. Kingsley Onuegbu remains the working horse and lighting guide for this team.
